ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನದ ಮೇರು ಪ್ರತಿಭೆ, ಚೆಂಡೆ ಮಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಕೃಷ್ಣಯ್ಯ ಬಲ್ಲಾಳರು ಸೋಮವಾರಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಹ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ವಿದಾಯ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಚೆಂಡೆ ಮದ್ದಳೆ ವಾದಕರಾಗಿ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲದೆ, ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ರೂಪಿಸಿದ ಕೀರ್ತಿ
ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರರದ್ದು. ಅವರು ಚೆಂಡೆ ಹಿಡಿದು ರಂಗಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದರೆಂದರೆ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರು ತನ್ಮಯ. ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರರ
ಚೆಂಡೆ ವಾದನಕ್ಕೆ ಎಂತಹ ಅರಸಿಕನೂ ತಲೆದೂಗಲೇ ಬೇಕು.
ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಚೆಂಡೆ ಮಾಂತ್ರಿಕರೆಂದೇ ಖ್ಯಾತಿ ಪಡೆದ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಜೀವನದ
ಕೊನೆಯುಸಿರಿನವರೆಗೂ ಚೆಂಡೆಯೊಡನೆ ಬಾಂಧವ್ಯ ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ಅರ್ಥಾತ್ ಚೆಂಡೆ ಮಾಂತ್ರಿಕ
ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ, ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಚೆಂಡೆ ಬಾರಿಸುತ್ತಲೇ ವಿದಾಯ ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಸೋಮವಾರ (ಏ. 27, 2009) ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಕೋರಮಂಗಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಡನೀರು ಮೇಳವು ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ
ಆಟವನ್ನು ಆಯೋಜಿಸಿತ್ತು. 80ರ ಇಳಿವಯಸ್ಸಿನ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು 20 ಯುವಕರೂ ನಾಚುವಂತೆ,
ಉತ್ಸಾಹದಿಂದಲೇ ಚೆಂಡೆ ಬಾರಿಸಲು ಸಿದ್ಧರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. 6 ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಕೇಳಿ ಬಡಿಯುವ (ಹೀಗೆಂದರೇನೆಂಬ
ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮುಂದಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಲಾಗುವುದು) ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರಸಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯನ್ನೂ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದರು.
ಆಗಲೇ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಹೃದಯಾಘಾತದಿಂದ ಕುಸಿದರು. ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಗೆ ಕರೆದೊಯ್ಯಲಾಯಿತಾದರೂ
ಮಾರ್ಗ ಮಧ್ಯಯೇ ಕೊನೆಯುಸಿರೆಳೆದರು. ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರರಿಗೆ ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಹೃದಯಾಘಾತವಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಆದರೆ, ಅವರನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿದ ವೈದ್ಯರು ಯಾವುದೇ ಅಪಾಯವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಅವರು ಪತ್ನಿ
ಮತ್ತು ಮೂವರು ಪುತ್ರರನ್ನು ಅಗಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಅವರ ತವರು: ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಕೃಷ್ಣಯ್ಯ ಬಲ್ಲಾಳರು ಜನಿಸಿದ್ದು 1928ರ ಏ. 24ರಂದು, ಕೇರಳದ
ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಬಾಯಾರು ಸಮೀಪದ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ. ತಂದೆ ಮರಿಮಯ್ಯ ಬಲ್ಲಾಳ್
ಮದ್ದಳೆ ವಾದಕರು.
ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು 6ನೇ ತರಗತಿ ವರೆಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ. ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ ಕೇಶವ ಭಟ್ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರರ
ಮೊದಲ ಗುರು. ನಂತರ ಮಾಂಬಾಡಿ ನಾರಾಯಣ ಭಾಗವತರು ಮತ್ತು ಕುದ್ರಕೋಡ್ಲು ರಾಮಭಟ್
ಅವರಿಂದ ಪಾಠ ಹೇಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ ಬಾಬು ರೈ ಅವರಿಂದ ಮೃದಂಗ ವಾದನವನ್ನು ಕಲಿತರು.
ಇದೇ ವೇಳೆ, ನಿಡ್ಲೆ ನರಸಿಂಹ ಭಟ್ಟರ ಮದ್ದಳೆ ವಾದನಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾರುಹೋದ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು, ಅವರಿಂದ ಮದ್ದಳೆ
ವಾದನವನ್ನೂ ಕಲಿತರು. ನಂತರ, ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಯುವಕ ವೃಂದದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮದ್ದಳೆವಾದಕರಾಗಿ ಊರೂರು
ಸುತ್ತಿದ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಥಳ ಮೇಳಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದರು. ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನದ ಮಹಾನ್ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆ ಕುರಿಯ ವಿಠಲ
ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿಗಳಿಂದ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಆಯಾಮಗಳನ್ನೂ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು 40 ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು
ಕಾಲ ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಥಳ ಮೇಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು.
ಅಗರಿ, ಬಲಿಪ ನಾರಾಯಣ ಭಾಗವತ, ಮಂಡೆಚ್ಚ, ಕಡತೋಕ ಮಂಜುನಾಥ ಭಾಗವತ, ಇರಾ
ಗೋಪಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣ ಭಟ್ಟ , ಪುತ್ತಿಗೆ ರಘುರಾಮ ಹೊಳ್ಳ, ಪದ್ಯಾಣ ಗಣಪತಿ ಭಟ್ಟ, ದಿನೇಶ್ ಅಮ್ಮಣ್ಣಾಯ
ಮೊದಲಾದ ಹಿರಿ-ಕಿರಿಯ ಭಾಗವತರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಿಮ್ಮೇಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಚೆಂಡೆ-ಮದ್ದಳೆ ವಾದಕರಾಗಿ
ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ಇವರದ್ದು, ಹಿಮ್ಮೇಳಕ್ಕೆ ನವೀನ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಕೃಷ್ಣಯ್ಯ
ಬಲ್ಲಾಳರು.
ರಷ್ಯಾ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರೂ ಮನಸೋತರು: ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಚೆಂಡೆ ವಾದನವೆಂದರೆ ಕೇಳಬೇಕೆ? ಆಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು
ಚೆಂಡೆವಾದಕರೆಂದರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಸಾಗರ. ಅವರ 'ಉರುಳಿಕೆ' ಕೇಳಲೆಂದೇ ಕಾದು ಕುಳಿತ ಮಂದಿಯ
ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲೇ ಗೆದ್ದು ಬಿಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು.
1958ರಲ್ಲಿ ರಷ್ಯಾ ಅಧ್.ಕ್ಷರ ಭಾರತ ಪ್ರವಾಸ ವೇಳೆ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ ಏರ್ಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರರ ಚೆಂಡೆ ವಾದನ. ರಷ್ಯಾ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರು ಚೆಂಡೆ ವಾದನ ಕೇಳುವುದರಲ್ಲೇ ತಲ್ಲೀನ. ಕೊನೆಗೆ
ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರರಿಗೊಂದು ಶಹಬ್ಬಾಶ್! ಅಷ್ಟು ಅದ್ಭುತವಾಗಿ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಚೆಂಡೆ ಬಾರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.
ಪುತ್ರನಿಂದಲೂ ಕಲಾ ಸೇವೆ: ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಅವರ ಪುತ್ರ ಮರಿಮಯ್ಯ ಬಲ್ಲಾಳರು ಕಟೀಲು ಶ್ರೀ ದುರ್ಗಾ
ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರೀ ದಶಾವತಾರ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಮಂಡಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಾವಿದರು. ತಂದೆ ಹಾಕಿದ ಹಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ
ಮುನ್ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕಲಾ ಸೇವಕ.
ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಥಳ ಮೇಳದಿಂದ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ ಬಳಿಕ ಹವ್ಯಾಸಿ ಕಲಾವಿದರಾಗಿ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಕಲಾ ಸೇವೆ
ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. 80 ವರ್ಷದ ಇಳಿವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಚೆಂಡೆ ವಾದನ ಕುಗ್ಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಲಾಸೇವೆ
ಮಾಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಇಹಲೋಕವನ್ನು ತ್ಯಜಿಸಿದ್ದೇ ಅವರ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠತೆಗೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ
ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರರಿಗೊಲಿದ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಗಳು: ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಜನಪದ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, ಕೇರಳ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, ಶೇಣಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ
ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಹಲವಾರು ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಗಳು ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರರನ್ನು ಅರಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿವೆ. ದೂರದರ್ಶನದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಪ್ರಥಮ
ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡಿದ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರರದ್ದು.
ಧೀಂಕಿಟ ಬಳಗದಿಂದ ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಂಜಲಿ:
ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಕಲೆಯ ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಇಹಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ವಿದಾಯ ಹೇಳಿದ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಕೃಷ್ಣಯ್ಯ
ಬಲ್ಲಾಳರಿಗೆ ಧೀಂಕಿಟ ಬಳಗವು ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಂಜಲಿ ಅರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಾವು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಬರುವಂಥದ್ದು. ಆದರೆ,
ಇರುವ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಧನೆಯ ಶಿಖರವನ್ನೇರಲು, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಸಾಧನೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಇರುವವರನ್ನೂ
ಕರೆದೊಯ್ಯಬೇಕಾದ್ದು ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ. ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನದ ಮೇರುಗಿರಿಯನ್ನು ಏರಿದವರು ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು.
ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು ಸಮಸ್ತ ಕಲೆಯನ್ನೇ ಬೆಳಗಿದ್ದು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲದೆ, ಹಲವಾರು
ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂಬೆಗಾಲಿಡುವವರಿಗೆ ಗುರುವಾಗಿ, ತಮ್ಮ
ಸಮಕಾಲೀನರಿಗೆ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶಕರಾಗಿ ಅವರು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ಸೇವೆ ಅನನ್ಯ. ಅದರಿಂದಾಗಿಯೇ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾರು
ಇಂದು ಅತ್ಯುನ್ನತ ಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಚೆಂಡೆ ಮಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಹಾಕಿರುವ ಅಡಿಪಾಯವನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು, ತೆಂಕುತಿಟ್ಟು ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನದ
ಕಂಪನ್ನು ವಿಶ್ವದ ಮೂಲೆಮೂಲೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಪಸರಿಸಲು ಅವರ ಶಿಷ್ಯವರ್ಗ ಶ್ರಮಿಸಲಿ ಎಂಬುದು ಧೀಂಕಿಟ
ಬಳಗದ ಹಾರೈಕೆ.

Noted Yakshagana artiste, chende and maddale player Chipparu Krishnayya Ballal died while performing a chouki Puja, a ritual worship performed in the green room before the main performance, at Bangalore on Monday 27th April 2009. He was 80. Ballal, who came to Bangalore on April 24 as a member of the Edaneeru troupe for a week-long program in various parts of the city, performed till Sunday. When Monday's performance (Jambavathi Kalyana-Veera Abhimanyu) was to begin in the evening at a branch of Shri Edneer Mutt at Koramangala, Bangalore, Mr. Ballal complained of chest pain, collapsed and breathed his last.
Shri Chipparu Krishnayya Ballal, popularly known as Chipparu all over Yakshagana land, who had been a prominent chende and maddale player for more than six decades, was active till the end. He had magic fingers to produce Yakshagana Music. He started his performance in Mulki Mela and then joined and worked for Dharmasthala troupe for more than 35 years and mesmerized people during all these years.
He borne in a tiny place called Bayaru (April 2, 1928) and started learning Maddale with Pandit Taltaje Keshava Bhat and subsequently moved to Kotekar, near Mangalore to learn Mrudanga from Vidwan Babu Rai. Latter, Mr. Chippar along with Mr. Damodara Mandecha and Kadatoka Manjunata Bhagawat has created a history on stage with their brilliant innovations and creativity. Great artists like Putturu Narayana Hegde, Kolyur Ramachandra Rao, K. Govinda Bhat, Empekatte Ramayya Rai, Puttur Shridhara Bhandari, Sampaje Sheenappa Rai and many more were all influenced by his chende while performing on stage. Mr. Ballal excelled in Jodata (Twin shows) where the competition is the essence.
I met Mr. Ballal many time and heard he talking about Yakahagana Music. He is one who agrees that Yakshagana Music is a distinct style of music that is in many ways different from the two schools of classical music, Karnataka and Hindustani. According to him, Yakshagana music in an independent tradition, but developed as a powerful theatrical medium capable of expressing the whole gamut of human emotions. Mr. Chippar’s understanding of Yakshagana’s tala, Raga shruti, and laya were exceptional. He believed that Yakshagana music is a medium in which the emotive and aesthetic functions could be communicated easily to the rural audience.
Chipparu has received many awards which include Karnataka Lalita Kala Academy award and Kerala Kala academy.
Thank you Chippar, for being with us as a greatest Yakshagana musician. You will be leading our Yakshaloka to greater heights through your life long achievements. We always remember your magical fingers which mesmerized Yakshaloka for more than 60 years.
